What is manual lymphatic drainage?
Manual lymphatic drainage (MLD) is a specialised massage technique using light, rhythmic skin movements to encourage lymph fluid towards areas where the lymphatic system is working effectively. The lymphatic system helps return fluid from the tissues to the bloodstream.
The sequence is planned according to the affected area and the person's condition. It differs from the firmer pressure commonly associated with muscle massage.
How can manual lymphatic drainage help?
Helping manage lymphoedema
For some people, MLD can form part of a treatment plan for lymphoedema—a long-term condition that causes swelling when the lymphatic system does not drain fluid effectively.
Addressing heaviness and tightness
Treatment goals may include improving the comfort of an affected area and making everyday movement easier. We review how you feel and whether the swelling changes.
Supporting a wider care plan
Lymphoedema management commonly also involves appropriately fitted compression garments or bandages, movement and skin care. Massage is one possible component, with the overall plan matched to your assessment and specialist advice.
When might lymphatic drainage be considered?
It may be considered for diagnosed lymphoedema as part of an individual treatment plan. If you have swelling after surgery, an assessment can help determine whether MLD is suitable.
For swelling associated with cancer treatment or complex medical conditions, care should be coordinated with the relevant specialist team. Not all swelling is caused by a lymphatic problem.
What does treatment feel like?
Treatment is usually gentle and rhythmic, with light contact. It should not involve deep kneading or painful pressure. The areas treated and sequence may extend beyond the visibly swollen region, depending on the drainage pathways being addressed.
Manual lymphatic drainage at PhysioB
We discuss when your swelling started, how it changes, any diagnosed conditions or previous surgery, and any compression treatment or specialist care you currently receive. We explain whether massage is appropriate and agree how progress will be reviewed. Where the cause is unclear or specialist management is needed, we recommend further assessment.
Is lymphatic drainage suitable for everyone?
It should not proceed when there is a suspected blood clot or an acute skin infection. Certain heart conditions and other causes of fluid retention require medical review first.
Seek urgent medical advice for a newly swollen, painful or hot limb, particularly when one side is affected. If swelling is accompanied by chest pain or breathlessness, call 999. Please also tell us about skin sensitivities and any product allergies.
How many sessions will I need?
The plan depends on the cause and extent of swelling and your response. Some conditions require ongoing specialist care. We review comfort, relevant measurements and how you manage everyday activities to guide the next stage of care.
