What is sports massage?
Sports massage is tailored to your sport, exercise or physical activity. It may draw on classical massage and more focused techniques. What makes the session sport-specific is its purpose and the attention given to your training demands, rather than a fixed level of pressure.
You do not need to be an athlete to book. It can also suit recreational exercisers and people with physically demanding routines.
How can sports massage support you?
Comfort after demanding exercise
Massage may reduce the soreness that develops after unfamiliar or strenuous exercise. The benefit varies, and treatment is adjusted to how sensitive the area feels.
Short-term flexibility
Some people experience a temporary improvement in flexibility after massage. We consider whether this is useful for your activity and how you feel when moving afterwards.
A planned place in your routine
We can discuss where massage fits around training, competition and rest. Sleep, appropriate nutrition and sensible training progression remain central to recovery.
When might sports massage be considered?
Examples include a runner seeking massage for tired leg muscles, a tennis player experiencing general shoulder tension, or a gym user looking for a session after a demanding training block.
Pain from a suspected injury needs assessment. Massage is not a test of readiness to return to sport, and pain relief alone does not establish that you have recovered from an injury.
What does a session feel like?
Sports massage may be gentle or firm, depending on the aim and timing. A session close to an event should be planned differently from one during a recovery period. We avoid introducing unfamiliar, intensive treatment immediately before an important competition.
Tell us if the pressure becomes difficult to tolerate. Soreness after treatment is not a target or proof of a better result.
What happens at your appointment?
We ask about your sport, how much and how often you train, recent changes and any upcoming events. Together, we choose the treatment focus. If an injury or recurring problem needs rehabilitation, we may recommend a physiotherapy assessment to guide your return to activity.
Is sports massage suitable for everyone?
Please tell your therapist about recent injuries, swelling, medical conditions, medication and allergies, including any allergy to sesame. A suspected muscle tear, significant bruising or a hot, swollen area needs assessment before massage. Depending on your symptoms and medical history, massage may need to be adapted or postponed until you have been assessed by an appropriate healthcare professional.
How often should I have sports massage?
There is no universal schedule. Appointments should fit your response, preferences and training needs. We review whether the sessions are helping with the comfort and movement goals agreed with you.
