What is deep tissue massage?
Deep tissue massage commonly uses slower strokes and sustained, targeted pressure. The therapist gradually works on the area you have agreed to treat, adapting the technique to how the tissues and your symptoms respond.
“Deep” describes the approach, rather than a requirement to use maximum force. Treatment should stay within a level you find comfortable, and you can ask for the pressure to be adjusted at any time.
How can deep tissue massage help?
Focused attention
The session gives time to a selected area, such as the upper back, shoulders or muscles around the hips, according to your needs.
Managing muscular discomfort
Massage may help ease muscular aches and discomfort in the short term, although the benefits vary from person to person. We assess whether this approach is useful for you, rather than assume that greater pressure will produce a better result.
Supporting your next steps
If recurring discomfort affects work or exercise, we can consider whether a physiotherapy assessment, movement advice or rehabilitation programme is also needed.
When might deep tissue massage be considered?
It may suit people who prefer slower, focused work for selected muscular aches and feelings of tightness. We first check whether the area is appropriate for massage and whether a gentler approach would better match your symptoms.
A new injury, marked swelling, unexplained weakness or persistent numbness needs assessment before deep pressure is considered.
What does treatment feel like?
Pressure may feel firm, and a sensitive area can be tender. Tell your therapist if you find yourself holding your breath, bracing against the pressure or experiencing sharp, burning or radiating pain. We can reduce the pressure, change the technique or stop.
Mild temporary tenderness can occur afterwards. Significant bruising or a marked increase in pain is not an intended result; contact us if you are concerned.
What happens during your appointment?
We agree the treatment area and a practical goal before beginning. The session can combine focused techniques with gentler work and comfortable positioning. Your response helps us decide how to adapt the treatment and what to recommend next.
Is deep tissue massage suitable for everyone?
Tell us if you take blood-thinning medication, bruise easily, have reduced sensation or fragile bones, have recently had surgery, or have an acute injury. These factors may make deeper pressure unsuitable. Please also mention skin conditions, other medical concerns and product allergies, particularly sesame.
We avoid massage over open wounds or areas of skin infection. If you have a diagnosed blood clot, seek advice from your medical team before booking. If you suspect a blood clot, seek urgent medical advice rather than booking a massage.
How many sessions will I need?
The number and frequency of sessions depend on your response and goals. If benefits are brief or the same problem keeps returning, we review the wider picture rather than automatically increasing pressure or repeating sessions.
